2. 7th grade full band rehearsal is Monday Dec. 8th starting at 2:10 pm in the band room and will go until the late busses at 3:40. The concert is in the South Gym at NVJH at 7:00, on Dec. 9th. Students will need to arrive in the band room by 6:30.

3. 8th and 9th grade band will need to arrive at PCHS at 6:45 in order to rehearse with the BJH and PCHS Bands before we go on stage to present our portion of the concert.

Grades

Now that grades are out you need to remember that if you need help come sign up and come in! I can't help you if you don't sign up. If none of the times work for you, come and talk to me. It is likely that I will be able to find a time that will work for you.

The sign up sheet is on the bullitin board next to the door on your way out of the room. Those are also the times that you can do make ups or retakes on tests.

Remember if you stay afterschool you'll have to find somewhere else to go after you are done in my room. I would be happy to take you to another room, if you have made arrangements with that teacher or to let you call for a ride. But, usually, you will not be able to stay until the late bus.

What a fantastic job last night!!! I wish I had the words to describe the experience we all shared last night. It was awesome. From first note to last note, everyone did their job. And especially thanks to you for helping to clean up afterwords. The last person left about 8:15 and we could have not done that if you hadn't helped, so thanks again.

I am so looking forward to next year, so hold on to your hats it's going to be a wild ride!!!!

Only 12 days until our concert. It's time to work out all of those small details. Make sure that we can certainly play all of our parts without issues. Some of us still have things to work out. Come in and get help for those issues! If you don't ask, you won't get help and then your test scores will reflect that. All playing tests must be completed by May 13th. Some Reminders

I thought it would be important to give a few reminders about some upcomming important dates.

I'll start with the dates that involve everyone, Tuesday, May 13th. That is the date of our next band concert for 7th, 8th and 9th grade. The 7th grade date that was printed in the parent newsletter was a mistake.

The schedule for that night looks like this.

2:50 - 4:30 - Selected students help set up in the South Gym
6:00 - 7th Grade Band Arrives in the Band Room
6:30 - 7th Grade Band Concert
6:45 - 8th and 9th Grade Bands Arrive (meeting places to be announced later)
7:20 - 8th graded band performs, immediately followed by 9th grade band and then the combined bands play the last piece
After the concert everyone helps take care of equipment and we all go home!

We are trying to work in a jazz band concert as well but just don't know if we will be able to fit it in the busy schedule for the evening.

The other date I need to mention is Solo and Ensemble Festival at Maple Grove Junior High. We have several students participating in the festival this year and that is wonderful. The date is April 26th. All performance times happen between 8:00am - 1:00pm. I will post individual times this Friday. Be sure to check for your time. The jazz band will be performing that morning at the festival. I will be able to give the students our time at this Friday's morning rehearsal.

Some things to consider before Mid Tri.

One note for all classes. You will have a SmartMusic playing assessment before the mid tri (Thursday). So plan on it.

Second, to the 9th grade band. I had told you before that you would be going on a field trip the day before our last concert. This does not set us up for the best possible performance. We need to come up with some solutions for what we can do to correct the situation. Your field trip day is important. You should go, it is a great and extremely fun learning opportunity.

Now that being said we need to brainstorm how we are going to play get some playing time between May 12th and May 13th at 7:15 pm.

I just wanted to say thank you to all of the 8th and 9th grade band students. You did a fine job at our concerts the past couple of days, and you should be very proud of yourselves. Please enjoy the weekend, go do something fun.

When you come back to Tri 3 be prepared to work your tail off!! We have a huge evening of concerts to prepare. Don't forget the concert date for 7th, 8th, 9th grade, Jazz Band and some selected solo's and ensembles is May 13th. Stay tuned for exact times. Each grade will present their own concert that evening, so they will be at seperate times. Everyone is certainly welcome to come early and stay late to enjoy the other concerts.

Concert Dates and Times

First off thank you all so much for being patient while I worked to find a sutible time and place for a concert for the students. That being said I have done my absolute best and have a solution that is the best available option we have.

The band concerts will have to take place during the school day. 8th grade will perform on Tuesday March 4th at 10:20 am. The 9th graders will play on Wednesday March 5th at 1:55. The concert will last about 20-25 minutes and will be in the band room at school. Parents are invited as well, I only ask that you RSVP to me by Monday 3/3 terryp@district279.org

I may have to limit the number of people that can come to each concert due to things like fire codes and such. I can only have so many people in the room at once.

We are currently looking for another concert date. The 5th, caucus night, will not work. We have people holding caucus's (is that a word?) at NVJH. So that simply won't be good for anyone involved.

So far this is what we do know.

Your concert date is NOT Feb 5. It will (hopefully) be sometime in Feb. I will send out a letter as soon as I can to get the date to all parents and students. Thank you for your patience while we work out this issue.

Middle level Solo and Ensemble Festival

The date is April 26th (confirmed!!!).

Details for the festival. This is a solo and ensemble festival for 7-9th graders. It is to get students together in small groups to work on music, learn about small ensemble and solo playing, become better and more independent musicians, (and have a little fun as well). There are 6 schools participating in the festival. It is hosted at Maple Grove Junior this year.

There is a small entrance fee for each group that the group will need to pay up front. This is to cover the cost of the using the school on a weekend, and to help find us judges, for each of the student ensembles.

You need to complete a few steps to get yourself going and set for the festival.

1. You need to get the instrumentation (what instruments are in your group) of your group approved by me.

2. Sign up your group on the sheet on the board.

3. Make an appointment with me to pick out music.

4. PRACTICE!

5. PRACTICE!

6. Meet with me to work as a group. It doesn't count unless all members of the group are there. You cannot go to the festival without working with me at least 3 times before April 26th, 2008.

7. Everyone will have to play for me before you will be assigned a festival time. This is to ensure we are all putting forth the same amount of effort in your group.

I know this seems like a lot but it is to ensure that everyone has a spectacular experience!

Lots of kids are asking quesions now about comming in. So if you waited till now you just might have to wait in line when you get to the band room. We'll get in as many students as we can, but I make no promises if you waited until now to do it.

Out of the 79 students in 8th and 9th Grade Band, so far 22 students have completed the SmartMusic assignment.

For a completion percentage of..... 27.84%

Now that is really unfortunate, that doesn't even get us close to a D for a grade. Be sure you get this done. We will be doing more of these and you need to get them done.

Available time are:
Before school - Anytime after 7:30
After School - You can only stay with me until 3:30, you must have somewhere else to go
B and C lunch on Monday, Thursday and Friday

Don't wait until the last minute, you will run out of time and there are no late assignments as I gave you two weeks to complete this assignment. If you have questions please ask.

Here it is, your first SmartMusic Assignment.

The first assignement of the new tri is to make a recording of our etude out of the Yellow book, using SmartMusic. Page 15 #16. This needs to be completed by 12/19/2007. If you do the assignment at school you should save it to the student save drive and to Terry Save Folder. Make sure your name is on the file. If you do the assignment at home you can email it to me at terryp@district279.org or you can bring it to school and save it in the student save drive. Please ask if you have any questions!

Concerts

Great job on the concerts these last couple of weeks! 8th and 9th Grade bands did a wonderful job. 9th graders you represented us well at Osseo and at PC so congratulations to you all on a job well done.

Now it's time to....dig right back into new music! Be sure you turn in all of your old music so that you don't get charged for it, and you'll be getting new stuff in band class. We'll be sight reading like mad for a couple of days. Some of the things you get will be available in SmartMusic so be ready to do some assessments and get used to practicing with it as well, it will only serve to help you.

Those of you that have not registered yet need to do that or you will miss out on very valuable points in Tri II.

Update for Assignments

Quite a few of you have done the SmartMusic Impact assignment but we still have a bunch of people that have not. Encourage your friends to get it done. Even if you did not do it in 1st trimester you still have to get it done in 2nd tri (for no points). If you don't you will miss out on tests in second tri. This will create a huge problem for you if you don't take any of the assigned tests in tri 2. Your chances of passing will decrese greatly. Give yourself the best chance possible for an A, and get registered next week when you come back to school. It will be available in the morning and afternoon (you won't be able to take the late bus unless you are going to see another teacher, I won't be here that late).

Everyone will need to register for one of my classes in SmartMusic Impact, this is an online feature of a software program that we are going to use in class.

The next question is how to do that.

1. You can do it before or after school with Mr. T

2. If you have SmartMusic at home you can do it on your home computer, and you will be able to complete the assignments at home as well, you won't have to do them at school sometime.

From SmartMusic select assignment from the menus at the top of the box. Then select enroll. enter all of the information it asks you for. Then it will ask you to select a school and teacher and a class, be sure to pick the correct class. Then wait for me to confirm you as my student and you are set!

To complete this you will need an email address. It is OK to use a parents email address, just be sure ifyou have a brother or sister that they do not try and sign up using the same email address. You need to use different ones.

You will need to do this by Nov. 19th so that we can get a score for you for an assignment before the end of the trimester.

This weekend

For all of my classes.

Be sure to spend some time with your instrument this weekend, we will all be playing on monday so you will need your instruments. Please don't come to class unprepared on Monday. If you don't play this weekend you will hurt when you come to class on Monday to play. Your muscles will be out of shape and they will not work the way you want them to. It will not only frustrate you, but it will also not feel good at all.

9th Grade don't forget. Tuesday @ OSH 6:45 pm don't arrive any earlier than 6:40. We will warm up and get ready to perform! It will be an excellent night.

Honor Band applications are due to the basket by friday at 3:00. Put them in the bottom basket of the stack of 3, not the stack of 2. These cannot be accepted late, I have to take them with me on friday so that the teachers can select the members of the honor band.

Homework time... 10/30

OK ladies and gents time to post some homework. Make sure your friends get this. Ask the sub (or Mrs. Ruohoniemi) to put it on the white board, you know where it goes!

Here it is.

7th Grade - keep practicing in your books! You all know which lines to work on, once you feel you have mastered the song go ahead and move on to the next one even if it's not assigned. But don't forget the old stuff, we still need to get it crossed off in class.

8th Grade - Flutes, There will be a test on Orion's belt when I return. Tell your friends!
Everyone - Mob busters - 28 - the parts we slow down at. Keep working on the accents as well
Dorian Festival - Letters E, F and G, then again at letter K

9th Grade - Fanfare for the 3rd planet - we need to move a little faster throughout the whole thing. Clarinets - take a look at the part at the beginning, you have to work on that, A LOT.

Buccaneer Suite - Keep working on dynamics and the correct tempo. Low brass you need to still look at the 3/4 measures in the first movement. We have that weird rhythm and we are still not together yet.

Keep working on Creed! I don't know when Mr. Boulka will be in to work with you but it will be soon. Woodwinds take a look at the end with all of the 8th notes. It will move fairly quickly.

This is Mozart's Requiem. He never finished this piece, one of his students did it for him after he died. A really great piece of music. Directed by Georg Solti.

Jazz Band audition times are posted next to the door in the band room. Please respect my time and the time of others, and arrive early for your audition so that you are not rushed getting out your instrument and warming up. If you are unable to make your time please be sure to erase your name and let me know so that I don't wait all morning or afternoon for you to show up when you're really not coming at all.

Now remember that not everyone has to practice everything. We all have rests in those sections and also parts that are not all that hard. Practice the hard stuff, so when you come to rehearsal you are ready to give it a try with the full group. No one has asked questions so that tells me everyone is able to perform all of their parts well. So if you have questions come and ask them. Remember there are no stupid questions, they all help us to get better.

When you come to class on Wednesday get out your instrument, music and stand and do NOT complete the work on the Smart Board. Instead come down to the front of the room and wait for me to begin class. Bring your instrument with you so that it won't get damaged by someone going to their seat. I am not going to ask you to play or talk to the class at all.

This is the site you can see fingering charts for all of the instruments. Click on one of the instruments on the bottom of the page and then put your mouse over the note you want and it shows you the correct fingerings. Pretty sweet!

Lesson the last two days

So some of you were quite impressed with the two groups that you saw in class over the last two days. Here are links to the two groups you saw Phantom Regiment from Rockford Illinois. The second group was The Cadets. Some amazing groups of people, and they are not the end of the talent pool. Go and check out Drum Corps International this is the competitive circut that these groups belong to. There are plenty of free videos to see. ENJOY!
